Featured Review Ultimate Ears Mini Boom Bluetooth Wireless Speaker

Ultimate-Ears-Mini-Boom-Speakers-Review-AH-1

In the world of Wireless speakers, there are plenty to choose from. I’ve reviewed quite a few this year. Just last week, I had reviewed the Ultimate Ears Boom speakers , in which I was very impressed with them. Those come in all sorts of colors and are a bit pricey. They are around $200, although Amazon often has them even cheaper. Ultimate Ears also has a Mini Boom speaker, that is half the size and half the price. Normally, when you get a speaker that is half the size and half the price, there are some things you have to give up. Which we know that very well with the Nexus line. However, with the Mini Boom, there’s not much you’re giving up. When compared to the Boom, the sound is almost the same, battery life is 15 hours on the Boom and 10 hours on the Mini Boom. But other than that you’re not really losing anything else. Although I do like the style of the Boom better than the Mini Boom, but that’s just my opinion.

Build Quality and Hardware

The outside of the Mini Boom, appears to be made of the same grippy plastic you’ll find on the Nexus 7 and Nexus 5. It’s actually quite nice to have on there. While the front and back is of course the actual speaker. And yes, sound does come out of the back of the speaker too. On top, you’ll find all your controls. That’s the volume rocker and the Bluetooth button. The NFC chip is also on the top. On the back You’ll find the power button, as well as the microUSB port to charge it and the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Ultimate-Ears-Mini-Boom-Speakers-Review-AH-5

Overall, I’m very impressed with the build quality of the UE Mini Boom. Although I’d like to see it a bit bigger, it’s still great for watching movies or listening to music. The Mini Boom is very lightweight, actually. Especially for having a battery that’s large enough to play for 10 hours. Which I can say it goes well past the 10 hours of continuous play back.

Double Up and the Mini Boom App

Similar to the Boom, the Mini Boom also allows you to connect two Mini Boom’s to one device. However, I was only given one for a review, so I wasn’t really able to test that out. But I will say, that it should work as well as it did on the Boom from last week. Which worked out very well. So because o that, I really didn’t use the app, as I didn’t need too.

My favorite feature of this small speaker was the NFC. I know it may not seem like a big deal. But when you review as many Bluetooth and Android devices as I do, being able to just tap your phone or tablet on the speaker and have it connect automatically is a great thing. Supertooth did it on their Freedom Bluetooth Headphones, and UE has done it on both their Mini Boom and Boom speakers, and I really love the idea.

Ultimate-Ears-Mini-Boom-Speakers-Review-AH-8

Sound Quality

I used the Mini Boom for about a week (and over the Christmas holiday) along with my Moto X. It worked out very well. In fact, I thought it was even a bit too loud on it’s lowest setting. Since I like to have music in the background when I’m writing or working, it was just a bit too loud for me. But that’s really not a bad thing, especially considering the size. There is a video down below comparing the Mini Boom’s sound to the Boom and to the Moto X speaker. So those wondering about the sound quality can hear it for themselves, although it may be a bit difficult to tell on a video. I really liked the sound quality on this small speaker, it can definitely get pretty loud.

Final Thoughts

I’m always asked, what’s the best Bluetooth Speaker around? And usually its by someone that doesn’t want to pay a couple hundred for a speaker. And at this point, I think I’m going to have to recommend the Mini Boom. It is $99, which still might be a bit pricey for some people, but for the quality of the sound and build of this speaker, it’s definitely worth the money. Not to mention the battery life. Out of all the Bluetooth speakers I’ve reviewed this year, I don’t think I’ve reviewed one that lasted as long as the Mini Boom or the Boom from Ultimate Ears. I’m looking forward to more speakers like this in 2014 though.

Logitech X100 Speaker Review

The latest portable speaker from Logitech, the X100 Mobile Speaker, breaks audio convention again with a round design. Its a no-frills low-priced product for music lovers with active lifestyle. It is spec-ed with a 5-hour battery life, Bluetooth connectivity, built-in mic that supports handsfree voice calls, 3.5mm line-in for the direct sound, micro USB port for ease of charging. Its surface is rubber-coated for ruggedness and durability. There is a mini handle to sling the X100 through cords or carabiner to secure it on your bag.

Compared to the UE Mini Boombox, the X100 plays louder at maximum volume, sounds brighter and clearer, but lacks warmth and stereo. The bass output is just as weak. But at S$69, it is a great price for a quality-build product from a reliable brand. Its design also allows you to hang the X100 around, which is not possible with the Mini Boombox. Consumers who need a more hifi-sounding portable speaker should look at the Bose SoundLink Mini, which will not disappoint.

Review Locket an android app that pays to unlock your phone

Still doing surveys online? Tired of registering your email to random accounts that simply would just spam you? Why not make some extra cash doing the things you probably already naturally do on a day to day basis anyways: unlocking your phone. Introducing Locket, an android phone app that pays you to unlock your phone.

First Impression:
Yes, you can now make some extra cash by just unlocking your phone. Sounds crazy, but Locket does exactly that. By putting the ads right on the locked screen, companies can ensure that consumer will see their ads. As a consumer, we can either read more about the ads or explore more - either way, you will still get that extra cash.

Ads are also dynamic, from regular ads, to videos and even coupons - most importantly, all ads looks beautiful. Each ads pay $0.01 per unlock and you can cash out using your PayPal account ($10 minimum).

Test Drive:
Due to the fact that they will load some ads on your front screen, it will definitely consume a little bit more
battery. However, I do not notice a significant decrease in battery life. To enhance use, you may want to remove all screen lock feature as it will make it seems like an extra chore to unlock your phone. The lock screen is very fluent and does not slow up my phone.

One thing I do notice, ads does not necessarily cash out every time you unlock your phone - they limit you to earn $0.01 per swipe and up to $0.03 per hour. The app is still under Beta, so as more advertiser jump on board, this limit may change over time.

Opinion:
Locket has definitely changed how consumer view ads. This model will force users to view the ads as it not only benefit the brand, but also the consumer (as they also get paid). I love how the ads are simple pictures that you can explore more as an option (instead of something that may clogged up your phone). The app does not alter the performance of my phone and has been generating some small dollars on the side.

Locket is definitely something I would recommend, especially if you hate ads, as you are making some small cash without even knowing.

Editor Note (08/12/2013):
Just earned my first $10 from Locket. Money is transferred directly to my Paypal account within 3 business days. Overall I am happy.

Samsung OmniaPRO B7330 User Review

No doubt the Samsung OmniaPRO B7330 is a phone of extremely smooth industrial design. I have had this phone for some time now – over nine months, and still love it.

The Samsung B7330 has a surprisingly large 2.6” 320x320 display fitted into its tiny frame and this sits above a nicely curved full QWERTY keyboard – almost feels like a shrunken down BlackBerry Bold.

With a thickness of under 11mm, the Samsung OmniaPRO B7330 is very compact and, despite the inevitable fingerprint marks, attractive – its ok if you mistake its black solid plastic covers as some kind of light metal.

The Samsung B7330 has a d-pad for navigation for its Windows Mobile 6.5 OS.

QWERTY Keypad

Around it you’ll find the send and end keys, home and back, and two soft keys for context sensitive functions. The keys are nicely bevelled and matt plastic like the keyboard and are easy to locate and press.

The keys are not spaced out as such, but are raised. My only criticism here is that I sometimes continually press the wrong button when typing and also often miss some letters - you have to press to type not just nudge. The Samsung OmniaPRO B7330 is not for those like me with larger thumbs - finger nail typing will suffice but slows down overall speed and accuracy.

The phone has a volume rocker and USB charge/data port on the left and a microSD slot and camera shortcut key on the right.

Audio, Photos and Video

I use the Samsung B7330 for recording voice at events, meetings and interviews – it records well in High, Medium or Low quality Mp3, AMR and WAV.

The phone also takes good quality photos and videos with its 3 mega-pixel camera. I have used the phone to record a few YouTube videos. Like every phone, just don’t rely on the phone’s video sound outdoors or at loud events.

I also hate that Samsung did not put a 3.5mm jack on the phone.

Productivity

I also use Samsung OmniaPRO B7330 to receive emails on the go.

I have found that I can quickly correct a Word, Excel or simple Powerpoint presentation on the move and later transfer it to my desktop at the office – does well with work productivity.

The only problem with office applications is you cannot create new documents on the phone. You need to save a blank Word or Excel template on the phone prior then you can edit that one and save a new document.

The other challenge is I still can’t access Windows marketplace from South Africa for some reason – so have to mostly download Java based apps from the internet.

The phone was released in 2009, so don’t expect it to run certain apps like Whatsapp for Windows…

Performance

Looking at speed on the phone, I found the Samsung B7330 generally quite responsive but it let itself down by unpredictable lagging and lock-ups. Clearly, these are the sort of issues which could be addressed by firmware upgrades.

Overly

Overall the Samsung OmniaPRO B7330 is solid, feels good in the hand, with a nicely balanced weight and doesn’t suffer from any creaks or undue flex. Despite the challenges said above, its general build quality is good – and won’tbe throwing it away anytime soon!

Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S Review

Sony Ericsson and I were old friends. Before there were slim phones, there was Ericsson T28. Before there were colour screen phones, there was Sony Ericsson T68. Before there were touchscreen smartphones, there was Sony Ericsson P800. These are phones that I had the privilege to own and experience.

Now, there is Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S, the phone with an arced back. The moment I switch on the phone, the crisp LCD display impressed me. Specs in summary:
  • 117 grams
  • 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor (not dual core)
  • 8.1 megapixel Exmor R Camera f/2.4
  • 4.2-inch Reality Display TFT LCD 854x480 pixels
  • Shatter-proof sheet on scratch-resistant mineral glass
  • 320MB system memory
  • 2nd microphone at the back of the phone near the camera lens
  • HDMI mirror output (excellent!)
  • Capture screenshot easily by opening the power button menu

Xperience
Being a single core, the arc S certainly cannot match the processing power of dual-core phones, but it certainly feels fast when navigating among apps, perhaps partly due to the fast screen animations. Like every other branded Android phones, Sony Ericsson customised the OS and included a handful of pre-installed apps and custom settings. I like the data monitor app that tracks data usage, the LiveWare Manager that auto-launches app when accessory is connected. When you pinch the home screen, instead of displaying all the pages like most Android phones, the Xperia arc S shows all the widgets floating around, and you can shake the phone to shuffle them. I also like how the installed apps can be easily sorted by tapping the sort icon on the lower left of the app list screen. Saves a lot of trouble searching for apps.

Timescape is Sony Ericssons answer to managing your social feeds, including SMS, email, Facebook, Twitter. You can find dozens of plug-ins in the Android Market, for instance, Foursquare, Gmail. Timescape merely aggregates the feeds, and when you select the item, it will bring you to the app or online to retrieve the full information.

Battery life is no worse than the average Android phones, considering it runs on higher processor. I can last one working day of usage despite turning on Timescape, Gmail and Tweetdeck.

Capturing Images
The Xperia arc S comes with a dedicated camera button at an extreme corner. The 2-step shutter button is small and stiff, so I find it hard to take a shot without jerking the camera. The button would be useful only to start the camera easily, but I would prefer activating the touch-capture mode to snap your images.

As for the camera quality, The Xperia arc S is touted to perform well under low light conditions. A simple comparison with the Samsung Galaxy S2 shows the following result:

Xpera arc S vs. Galaxy S2. Scene Mode: STD

The Galaxy S2 refuses to shoot at higher exposure despite increasing the EV. So I switched to Night Scene Mode on the S2 and got this:

Xpera arc S vs. Galaxy S2. Scene Mode: STD vs. Night

The Xperia manages to capture decent images under low-light normal mode, while the Galaxy S2 captures more details at lower noise level after coaxing it with Night Mode. If I were to switch the Xperia to Night Mode, the shutter speed became far too slow for me to shoot handheld. The result then seems to be the reverse of the Samsung - underexposed.
Xpera arc S vs. Galaxy S2. Scene Mode: Night
Conclusion: Xperia arc S standard scene mode is more flexible in capturing images for all lighting conditions, but noise level is generally higher than Galaxy S2.

Weaknesses
As a top-range model, the Xperia arc S lacks many features that are present in other competitors.
  • No front-facing camera for video chats or self portraits.
  • Small system memory to hold all your apps. Once you run out of system memory, you will not be able to add more apps, unless you install supported apps on external SD card.
  • No built-in user memory. The Xperia arc S relies on the external microSD card to store user data.
  • Lock screen does not have any direct music player controls when media is playing. A shame considering Sony Ericsson to be associated with portable music players.

Summary Impression
The Xperia arc S stands out to me as a uniquely designed lightweight smartphone that provides above-average screen display and OS performance with 1.4GHz processor. It is integrated with Facebook connectivity, and together with Timescape, encourages ease of social interaction. The HDMI-out port lets the user share content on large HDTV easily. I like the interface theme and animations are smooth. Consumers who want a touch of style for their phone should look at this.

Sony VAIO T13 Ultrabook Review

The Sony VAIO T is Sonys first ultrabook weighing just 1.6kg for the 13-inch version (SVT13115FGS). Thanks to the lightweight design, I find it a breeze to lug it around throughout my 2 week review. Main activities: Internet browsing, word processing, movie watching, music listening.

  • Lightweight at 1.6kg
  • Durable brushed aluminium body
  • A wide variety of connectivity options such as VGA, LAN, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI, SD, MS-Pro ports. No need for any adapters.
  • Its “Rapid Wake + Eco” function that allows it to resume from sleep mode in about two seconds. Seems to be working rather well: I am able to leave it in the sleep mode for extended number of days.
  • A hybrid HDD and SDD drive that allows for faster startup and data retrieval. Case in point: laptop starts up within 30 seconds.
  • Gesture Control, great when you want to control the VAIO from a distance.

Battery Life
I didnt do any scientific measurement, but most ultraportables come with some battery management programs to let you maximise your battery life. Lets just say that I never felt threatened about battery life when I use it on the go. Independent review sites found that the VAIO T can last more than 5 hours.

Weight Balance
Good weight balance. The top LCD panel was light and even when I tilted the laptop to its maximum angle, the laptop could never be toppled over.

Keyboard
Good keyboard response, but felt the keys are too spaced out. No fault of Sony, as I personally prefer the non-chiclet conventional desktop keyboard.

Trackpad
Good trackpad response. One of the better ones Ive experienced, though at times still not as responsive as Apple Macbooks.

Sound
The VAIO T is capable of pumping out loud and clear audio good for general listening. For better performance, it is always advisable to plug external speakers.

Heat
The VAIO T is cool for low-intensive applications like web surfing. No issues even when watching videos. I never felt uncomfortable when using it on my lap.

VAIO software
Several VAIO apps like VAIO Gate, VAIO Control Center, improves user experience. VAIO Gesture lets you control web page browsing and media browsing. It is designed with the assumption that you are more than a feet away from the laptop (instead of within arms reach). VAIO Gate is a launcher utility located at the top of the screen that helps you access your favourite apps. VAIO Care is a one-stop app to help you manage your VAIO laptop, including system information, troubleshooting, diagnostics, manual, restore and recovery.

Hardware Quick Buttons
There are 3 buttons on top of the keyboard. Pressing "ASSIST" when laptop is off boots to a special rescue app in Windows to help you in Windows problem. Pressing "WEB" when laptop is off boots into Windows and opens the browser within 30 seconds. The "VAIO" button is a configurable shortcut key for use in Windows.

Screen
The screen colour appears to be geared towards the blue tint. Skin colour appears cold. Contrast level is flat. You might need to run it through some calibration tools if you want to use this laptop for colour-accurate work.

Comparing VAIO T screen with my Philips 24-inch LCD monitor.

Experiential Feedback
I like the VAIO T for its lightweight, its rugged aluminium body, its fast startup, its ease of going into sleep mode when I close the lid, its ability to wake up within 5 seconds, its ability to keep cool, its responsive trackpad. The unique angular corners allows me to open the lid easier, the included VGA port means I can easily plug to legacy projectors at office. The VAIO Gesture although only supports a few gestures, does come in handy.

I am not pleased with the LCD colour tone, and somewhat disappointed with the lack of backlit keyboard keys. The glossy LCD glass is a subjective issue, and personally I dislike that. Great for multimedia, but awful for reading.

This is my first time reviewing a Sony laptop, and I must say I am pleased with the quality and the price. I dont see the need for thinner laptop. To me, weight is more important than size. The Sony VAIO T has a good balance of weight and durability, making it very usable and portable on the move.

One cant help but benchmark against Apple Macbook Air.

Review Facebook Home

Facebook just now released Facebook Home for your android devices. As of this review, Im testing the app using my Samsung Galaxy S3. To  sum it up, Facebook Home replaces your homepage of your android devices into your Facebook news feed. For those who barely use Facebook, these changes might sound like an overkill; however, this is perfect for those who wants to be up-to-date with their newsfeed and is trigger happy with the status updates. NOTE: not all devices are compatible.

First Impression:
As I already stated in the intro - your homepage is now under Facebook. The moment you unlock your phone, you are greeted with your friends status update (with text update, you will have their cover picture as the background). You can immediately like/comment your friends post without even unlocking your phone! Holding the post will let you view the full picture posted; by tapping anywhere on the screen, you will bring out an icon of your profile picture; you can drag this to either open the Facebook Messenger app, your app list and last opened app.

BAD NEWS - your widgets and folders does not work with Facebook Home. Which (in my opinion) just completely removed 80% of the reason why i love the old interface. In exchange, you have 3 bonus button (Status, photo, check-in) that speeds up your Facebook status update. Also, Facebook Home also hides your top toolbar (you can still access them by dragging it down) - this means it gets really inconvenient to tell time.

On the plus notes, any post that is related to you (or chat) pops up immediately on the front page - giving you instant access to your Facebook.

Test Drive:
Although it is inconvenient to lose all of your widgets and having to reorganize your apps, Facebook Home works very well with the Samsung Galaxy S3. Facebook updates are sync almost immediately as every time I unlock my phone I immediately see a new post. Scrolling through the news feed feels natural and it is very responsive. I do feel that this app kills my battery pretty fast due to the automatic sync. The highlight of this is the dedicated Facebook Messenger (which is a different app) that allows you to have a chat box ready 24/7 |full review here|.

Final Opinion:
Although it is a smooth running app - I am not much of a Facebook user. It is cool to be able to see my friends post instantaneously, but sometimes they can post pictures I do not want strangers to see whats on my phone. If you may notice, I dislike the app since widgets and folders are now gone - giving the menu page a more disorganize feel. Is it a keeper? Not in my opinion, but then again - I am not much of a Facebook users; some of you may already see it impossible to live without.

Price: FREE
Rating: 3 out of 5 - Although Facebook Home works really well, it not equal to what you exchanged it for (shorter battery, now widgets/folder, border line creepy).
